The food here is great. especially enjoy the caesar salad. The rack of lamb was cooked perfectly, but maybe a little bland for my taste. It had a nice peppery crust, but the meat was left without sauce or noticeable spicing. I think this was deliberate, so just not to my taste. Nice wine selection here and the service, as always, was excellent.
The Mill has the pleasant atmosphere of a large rambling country home. We were seated in the spacious back room of what are many rooms that make up the Mill's eating area. We sat in front of a well lit wine cellar which is the center piece of this room. We were attended to and served promptly through out the meal. When all our guests arrived, and we chose our wine it was carefully decanted. The rack of Lamb was tender and done to perfection but unfortunately (as with most restaurants serving lamb) the flavour went missing somewhere between the kitchen and our table. The vegetables that were served with the lamb were perfectly done and the mashed potatoes while voluminous were just ok. All in all a satisfying but not exceptional experience.
I have eaten here several times for dinner but this was my first time for lunch. The roasted tomato soup was delicious, with a very nice texture and was just spicy enough. The cream base was not overwhelming or heavy but was present with each spoonful. The sesame Miso crusted salmon served on a bed of lettuce was done "well" (cooked through) but was still moist and held the flavour of the Seasame Miso. The dressing on the bed of greens complimented the salmon. The red pepper and onion slices in the salad were a bit big and threatened to overwhelm this dish. Compared to our dinner service lunch was a bit off an on. While we were quickly served our starters we were into our second basket of bread before our main course arrived.
I am a frequent eater at the Aberfoyle Mill and find it an excellent ambiance, pleasant efficient staff, and I am pleased to see that their wine cellar is getting larger. I was able to find a specific vintage of Solalia wine that I had in Italy in the summer. If its your first time, then I highly recommend the rack of lamb, and caesar salad, as these are signature dishes, but its all good. Bon Appetit.
Excellent food all around. The steaks were done to perfection and everything was extremely fresh. We sat at a table that was close to the fireplace. Great atmosphere at the mill! Previous reviews have commented on poor service. I can't speak to those experiences, but ours was a very positive one. The wait staff were very attentive and not overly intrusive. We would go back in an instant.
