Situated on bustling 149th Street sits Fine Wines by Liquor Select — a sanctuary for wine lovers. The building has a history for owners Nancy Fung and Leon Luke, a brother and sister duo. It formerly held a family grocery store owned by their father years ago. In 1994, Nancy and Leon converted the two-storey space into a specialty fine wine shop on the main level and a private tasting room on the top floor.
Today, they have the help of manager Jeff Sparling to run the store. “As opposed to the mass-market brands, we focus on wines that are made in smaller quantities by people who care about quality and authenticity,” says Jeff. “We probably have the largest selection of artisan wines, spirits and beer in the city.”
Planning a special event or just need some help selecting the right wine to go with your dinner? “The staff are very good at food and wine matching,” says Nancy. Education is a cornerstone of the business with staff members being trained through ample tasting and sampling of different wines and learning about their origins.
While the store boasts a collection of rare and collectible wines (how about a bottle of 1983 Chateau Petrus for $2,800?), they also stock more than 900 wines under $30, which focuses on smaller-quantity producers. Liquor Select also boasts a “Fabulous under 50” wall, which features great everyday wines for under $50.
“We choose the best wines for the grape varietal, for the region and for the price,” says Nancy. All wines are sampled before being purchased to ensure they are good quality wines for the price point.
