How to make your own moth-repellent sachets

To protect your clothing from these unwanted guests, you can make fetching moth-repellent sachets using thin or loose fabric to allow the fragrance to spread. Here's how.

• Absinthe, cloves, bay leaf, eucalyptus, lavender, chamomile, cinnamon, peppermint and feverfew all repel moths and other insects that prey on wool, mohair and all animal fibres.
• These plants also clean the air; rue has the added advantage of keeping flies away.
• Press or shake the sachets occasionally to diffuse the fragrance well.

Put a few sachets in your cabinets to give your clothes maximum protection. Each sachet is about 13 centimetres (five inches) in diameter.

• Two 15 centimetre (six inch) squares of printed, embroidered or brocaded light cotton
• Fine-pointed pencil
• Matching sewing thread
• dried moth-repellant herbs and spices
• Serrated scissors
• Ribbon for hanging (optional)
• Felt scraps in two different colours (optional)
• A small button, decorative or not (optional)
• Stranded cotton embroidery in a contrasting colour (optional)

1. Using a cup or a saucer and without applying pressure, draw a circle of 10 centimetres (four inches) in diameter at the centre of one of the squares. If you're using a fabric with a pattern, center it.
2. Place the second square of fabric under the first, back to back. Sew along the outline, leaving an opening of about four centimetres (two inches) for filling. Tie off at the back of the bag (don't forget that you're working on the right side of the fabric).
3. Cut around the seam with serrated scissors, at about 1 1/2 centimetres (3/4 inch) in distance.
4. Using a funnel or a paper cone, fill the bag with plants, without packing it.
5. Close the opening with an invisible seam. If you want to add a ribbon to hang the bag, tuck the ends of the ribbon into the opening and sew them firmly into the seam.
6. To decorate with a double flower felt, use the patterns above.
7. Then place the smaller flower on the larger one and place a button in the middle. Place on the centre of the bag and sew through the entire thickness using embroidery cotton.
