Regardless of whether it’s a master bedroom or guest room, you need a cozy cocoon where you can rest and relax. For some reason, bedrooms are often the last room to get attention. No need to be an interior designer to turn your bedroom into a master suite.
What seems to be the problem?
- The colour of the walls
- The flooring
- The level of brightness
- The quilt and matching curtains
- Furniture that dates back 30 years
- Storage space
- The closet
- All of the above
Of course, you must first establish a budget. If you haven’t, you’ll have to go back to square one and figure out how much you can realistically spend — especially if you answered "all of the above."
Have you done your homework?
Set your priorities and gather your ideas in order to avoid over-spending.
- Do you have a theme in mind for your bedroom? A clear theme will help you decide on colours, shapes and textures.
- Running out of ideas? Are there just too many magazines? While magazines are a great jumping off point, use your own life to inspire you. Childhood memories, and pictures and souvenirs from travelling can help you with your concept. Think of a hotel you particularly enjoyed or start by choosing a painting that you admire and would like to hang in your room. Trust your instincts and get your ideas down on paper.
- Have you shopped around online and visited showrooms? Ideas and themes can be built around a central element such as a chest at the end of the bed, a vintage lamp on a nightstand, a unique rug or a deluxe duvet.
- Don’t hesitate to get advice on colours. Paint store websites offer countless ideas. You can even try out virtual room design tools which allow you to preview what your room would look like with different wall colours.
Details add character
Bedrooms don’t have to follow the decor style of the rest of the house. Accents are convertible, and details transform any room into a meaningful space.
- Organize your “dream closet”. You’ll increase storage and will be more motivated to get up for work in the morning now that you can easily find everything!
- Treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting for a long time, be it a softer carpet for your toes, a TV with a big screen, an antique dresser with a gorgeous finish, or a fireplace for a romantic evening on a cold winter’s night.
- Create an area designated for reading, especially if there aren’t any other rooms in the house where you can get to enjoy a little solitude.
- Experiment with bold, dark colours for a subdued effect in the evening.
- Multiply your light sources and add dimmers. You can create mood-lighting appropriate for different activities i.e.: getting dressed in the morning, reading or making love.
- Don’t be afraid to invest in a quality mattress and premium bedding. Also check the opacity and thickness of the drapes to ensure adequate darkness at night. After all, we spend a third of our lives sleeping!
