5 steps to make an easy no-sew fleece blanket

November 3, 2015

A no-sew fleece blanket is a fun way for children to create an easy and functional handmade craft. Once the cutting is done, one of the great things about this project is the fact that most children can work on it with minimal supervision. It's also a great way to keep kids busy during a snow day when they might otherwise develop a case of cabin fever. Here are all the necessary steps for crafting a beautiful no-sew fleece blanket.

5 steps to make an easy no-sew fleece blanket

1. Materials you will need

  • 2 equal-sized pieces of fleece fabric
  • Piece of cardboard or poster board cut into a 10 cm square
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure or ruler

2. Choose your fabric

  • Select two pieces of fleece that are both the same size.
  • Since these pieces of fabric will become the front and back of the blanket, consider choosing contrasting colours or even one solid-coloured piece and one printed piece.
  • You might decide to recycle two old fleece throws for this project, as long as you don't mind cutting them up.
  • Important: The size of both pieces of fleece fabric should be 10 cm larger than the desired size of the blanket. For example, if you wish to make a toddler-sized blanket that is 91 cm X 127 cm, begin with a fabric size of 101 cm X 137 cm.

3. Cut the corners

  • Line up the fabric so both pieces of fleece are spread out on a flat surface, one atop the other.
  • Both pieces should be right side out.
  • Now place the cardboard square on the edge of one corner of the fleece. Cut out the square corner.
  • Repeat the process and cut out a square corner on all four sides of the fleece.

4. Cut the fringe

  • Once the corner squares are cut out of the fabric, cut 10 cm fringe strips along the entire border of the fabric.
  • Each strip of fringe should be about the width of your finger.
  • You may find it easier to use a ruler or measuring tape when cutting uniformly sized fringe, but this isn't necessary.
  • It's okay if the fringe cutting is slightly imperfect.

5. Tie the strips of fringe into knots

  • While both pieces of fleece are still flat on the table, one atop the other, begin tying knots along the entire perimeter.
  • Each knot will consist of two fringe strips, one strip from each piece of fleece fabric.
  • Simply tie knots around the entire perimeter of the blanket until you reach the end.
  • Voila! You've finished creating your first no-sew fleece blanket.
  • These blankets make wonderful homemade gifts that are inexpensive and fun for kids of all ages.
