I frequent local bars looking for food and drink deals. I am happy to report that I find, "My Bar" previously called "The Goose & Tressel" in the Howard-Johnson's on Gorge Road in Victoria to be one of the more economical places to go. Beer prices are very reasonable: 20 oz glass of beer (they don't sell 8-9 oz glasses of beer) are $4.00 for a Cariboo beer. That is one of the best prices in town. The food has improved substantially since the new owner has leased the place and here again the prices are very reasonable. On Saturdays they host a blues jam. Give "My Bar" a try for yourself as you may find it economical as well as a friendly place to enjoy lunch and a beverage. Read more

I stumbled accross Vic's Steakhouse last Friday and was more than happy I did. I was staying in the James Bay area for a week and was surprised that I hadn't heard of this gem from more people! We sat in the lounge and were served by a bartender who was charismatic and knowledgable. The service was prompt but not rushed, and we were treated to great music by a live band. I ordered the halibut, as I do not eat meat, and it was done perfectly. Very simple but flavourful at the same time. My companion ordered a steak and said it was one of the best he had experienced in Victoria so far! We shared a home made ice cream sandwich for dessert and at the end I was so full we ended up staying and enjoying the band for another cocktail. Although this establishment now serves Chinese food, to me it is not the crowning jewel of this eatery. It has truly stood the test of time. As a young boy, mom and dad would slip me a few bucks, I'd get on my bike and pedal up there, back when the original owner was working his own place, breading and seasoning by hand (hint: this was in the late 70's). This was THE weekly treat for me to take this delicious, crispy, one of a kind taste home in the basket of my bike and delve into a taste sensation. The "Colonel" got punk'd everytime, hands down. You do not go here to sit in, you don't go here to take in the "ambiance"... It was never, ever the way this place was supposed to be.
