It was my choice. Anywhere I wanted to go for my birthday dinner was the plan. It had been over 10 years since I last ate at the Charcoal Steak House, so that was it. We made reservations early and were seated at a booth. The restaurant was very dark, which bothered one of my guests, but I loved it. A very warm atmosphere. Private while sitting in a room full of other diners. We chose the Crab Cakes for our appetizer. They were delicious. Perfectly crusted with panko, soft and tender on the inside. A nice tartar sauce served on the side. The dish also came with a side of pickled cucumber, which I was not a fan of, but my guests loved. Looking over the menu, we made the obvious choices being in a steak house. The prime rib special, the Nebraska Rib-Eye and the King City Rib-Eye. The Prime Rib was great. Soft and juicy, but my guest had an issue. She ordered well done, but it was served medium. She still ate it, and loved it, but was not given what she ordered. My other guest loved the King-City Steak. Served with Sweet Potato Fries. I sampled a bite or two of her steak, and it tasted better than my Nebraska cut. The steak I chose, the Nebraska Rib, was wonderful. But again, the kitchen was a little off with the cooking. I ordered medium, and was served well done. Regardless, it still was one of the best steaks I've ever had. The ends of the steak had that perfect crunchy crust that everyone loves on a Rib Steak. We passed on dessert, seeing I had a cake at home waiting. After chatting to our waitress, my guest let it slip that it was my birthday, before the bill came she brought out a peice of Mint Ice Cream Cake free of charge. I appreciated that. Read more

I was here with a friend for a Monday lunch. Apparently Monday is the slowest day of the week , the place wasn’t busy, and the lunch traffic was handled by one friendly young waitress. In some places when business is slow and the staff don’t have much to do, service can be bad. Why exert yourself for just a couple of people in the corner ? However that wasn’t the case at Paddy’s as our girl was keeping herself quite busy, giving extra attention to the few early lunch hour customers who were already there. As the lunch hour rolled on more people showed up, and eventually they had a respectably sized crowd for lunch. I had one of the specials of the day -the mushroom soup ($4.99) and it was followed by the chicken tikka masala curry ($12.99). I was hungry and I tucked into the soup as soon as it arrived and I didn’t pause very often until it was gone. It was pretty good and if I was home and had a spatula, I would have scraped the soup bowl clean and licked the spatula ! I was still hungry after the soup. The curry that followed was okay. The large plate was divided into equal parts of green peas, plain basmati rice, and the chicken curry. My first impression was that I would have liked fewer peas and more curry! However the portions were just enough to satisfy my hunger – not too little, not too much – just right! My friend had the seafood pie with a side of chowder ($15.98). I didn’t ask him how it was and he didn’t volunteer, so I guess his meal was at least acceptable and probably better than just that. I found my curry a little bland. I think they described it as “medium” on the menu but I thought it was weaker than that. I suppose I could have asked for a bottle of Tabasco sauce to heat it up. They must have to cater to diners who think they are adventurous with hot food but who really aren’t ? The service was very good, the food was at least okay maybe “good”, but the price ? Well, I thought the price was at the top end of the lunch range. I paid $51 with tip for the two of us and we only had soft drinks ($2.79) with our meals. I think we could have received the same value at other places for about $15 less. I usually end up at Paddy’s about once a year. The prices are probably why I don’t go there more often. I’ve got a feeling it would be a very appropriate place to spend an evening with friends for some pub food, a few drinks, and a great atmosphere, but as a lunch spot…well, there’s better value elsewhere in “River City”. we went for a friend's birthday dinner. her and her bf love the place. they talk about it all the time. i have heard mixed reviews about the place. going online and checking out menu didn't look too appealing to me. regular food with a high price and over stuffed with "expensive" words for simple ingredients i had a glass of the Chardonnay from usa. excellent should have order 1.2 liter. i shared the sicilian mussel except made not spicy (don't like spicy food). the broth has aromatic and delightful. nice tomatoes, olives and onion broth. mussels were plump and tasty. the table bread was amazing. i usually steer away from bread because it is dry and garbage. but this was warm, soft and fluffy in the middle with a slight chew and crispy on outside. i ordered the shrimp and scallop carciofi (fettucine) made without cream and with tomato instead. the pasta was cooked perfectly, scallops a bit fishy, shrimps were poached perfectly. a bit too much tomato but im a bigger fan of cooked pasta perfect el dente. people sitting around me ordered veggie gnocchi (she loved it), short rib gnocchi (he wolfed it down and wanted more), prosciutto fuselli (she said pasta was amazing too slow portion and prosciutto tasted like bacon, pork chop dinner (thought it was amazing), smoked chicken el la vodka (he said was ok). food was good better than i expected. a bit over priced but it was a friend's birthday. The menu is not extensive and there was no overall 'theme' but the food we had was pretty good. They recommended a great wine and the waitress was excellent - both friendly and helpful. We booked at the last minute and were glad we did. Not a fine dining experience if that is what you want but a comfortable experience. We split a salad and the entree portions were a good size. My husband had a Thai noodle type dish and he really enjoyed it. I had the prime rib which came as I requested. We didn't have dessert but marvelled at a couple of plates that went by. Read more

We had a great time at Bijou and I don't agree with any of these negative reviews. To me a chalkboard menu and higher prices reflect this restaurant's commitment to local food and keeping things interesting during changing seasons. I respect this restaurant for providing quality food and taking their time rather than taking a touristy "more bang for your buck" approach. One that note though, I did notice the service was a little slow. Not really slower than I'd expect considering the care that goes into the food, but if you're rushing to catch a show this place is maybe not your best bet. When we had our Stratford trip we made our reservation on a night where we weren't seeing any shows and got to appreciate a slower paced and delicious meal. Read more

My friends and I decided to visit Cambridge for an out-of-town getaway. We are all admitted food snobs (one is a chef), so we perused menus and reviews online before heading out (we're from the GTA). It was pretty busy on Friday night so I am glad we made reservations. We arrived and were seated by a very accommodating host (who we found out later was an owner), and served by one of the most pleasant servers I've ever encountered (perhaps his name was Josh?). Every single employee at that restaurant was happy to be at work, which may not sound important, but it is and is one of the gages I use when I'm dining out. My husband and I both worked in restaurants for years, and happy staff says a lot about the owners, chef and overall customer experience that the server is trying to sell. Josh spoke highly of the owner as well as proudly explained the food and the creativeness of the chef and his menu. The food was fresh, creative and delicious. We were really delighted. It wasn't a five-star dining experience (but you are not going in expecting that), rather, it is a twist on pub fare that will leave you pleasantly surprised. We also enjoyed that the restaurant was not 'full of itself', the staff, chef and owners were humble and grateful for any compliments and made us feel welcome and appreciated as diners at their restaurant. My friends and I were sold from the moment we walked in. So much so, that we went back for lunch the next day (it was a no-brainer) and the chef came out to say hi to us and thank us for coming back! We cannot say enough great things about our experience there. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to visit Cafe 13 and enjoy their great food and hospitality. Read more

While in Stratford to see a play. we dropped in to the Boar's Head Pub. I had been there twice before, and thought my husband would like it too. Since we had had a late lunch we decided to have drinks before the play, and come back afterwards for something to eat. About 6:30 pm, we ordered draft (a Strongbow for me, and Coors Light for my husband) and then switched to whiskey. I had an Irish coffee (needed the caffeine before the play) and my husband had a rye and coke. After the play, around 11 pm, we returned. The place was rockin', with a live band and some people who had clearly spent the last 4 hours drinking! It got rather loud, but the music was good. I had Strongbow, and my husband stuck to rye and coke. The wings were very good -- big, meaty, lightly breaded, and with the right sauce. My husband had honey garlic, and I had hot (the server said it was Frank's Red Hot sauce, which was what I was looking for). There were 7 wings in a one-pound order, with a few carrots and celery sticks and dip, for $8.95 .I would definitely come back for the wings. The servers were very friendly and attentive during both visits. There were 2 servers who regularly stopped by to check on us, and who made us feel very welcome -- one of them recognized us when we returned, and warned us about the drunks who would be dancing when the band returned from break (she was right!). As far as pubs go, this one is great -- good food, lively atmosphere, good choice of draft, and great location on one of Stratford's main streets. The Boar's Head is within easy walking distance of the Tom Patterson Theatre, and slightly farther to the Avon and Studio Theatres. Read more

My family and I have been coming to Grog's for years now. It's a great place to come to enjoy friends, food, and have a laugh. The service at Grog's is unbelievable great! Everyone is so nice and brings a positive atmosphere to the restaurant. It is always a good idea to make reservations before going to Grog's because it is always busy, in a good way. The location is just outside of the Grand Bend Strip, about a 10 minute drive with a lot of parking. It's a great place to go after a long day at the beach. Now, the food at this restaurant is fantastic. It is always fresh and delicious. My favourite dish there is the panzarotti with their famous zany bread, which I highly recommend. All the dishes they have on the menu are prepared in a timely manager and it never disappoints. Grog’s is a great place to bring your family and friends and enjoy all the wonderful people and food. Dave was very helpful with our decisions. He did not rush us and was very patient. Our english is not great but he was able to understand and help us with deciding. The wrap and roll platter was a great taste of different items and coconut shrimp was very good. We order many different dishes to try and share. We had the best dining experience at lunch today. We spent the last two days in the hospital so we were in need of a good lunch. Stacey was phenomenal!!! It was pretty busy but she looked after us like were only patrons. She was very efficient and friendly. I can't find the Waterloo location on this site but this review is about my experience there. Went on a Wednesday with girlfriends for drinks and nibbles in the bar. The service was awesome and the food was pretty quick and very tasty. We shared spinach dip, antojitoes and nachoes and we were stuffed! We didn't know a band would be playing and it was an added bonus. We had a great time and have plans to make this our regular get- together hangout! Read more
