While the artificial variety is easy enough to locate, fresh-cut Christmas trees are a bit trickier. However, the businesses and organizations below carry a forest of trees perfect for your pine-scented holiday season.
Visit this old-fashioned annual Christmas tree lot operated by St Cyprian’s 31st Scout Group until its stock of trees is sold out. Manned by volunteer kids and their families, it’s one of the city’s biggest such tree lots. In the parking lot of Holy Cross Anglican Church, select from an array of pine and fir trees. Saturdays 9 am to 9 pm, Sundays noon to 6 pm.
Alberta’s Junior Forest Wardens operate a Christmas tree cutting lot a 60-kilometre drive west of the city where you can select and cut down your own pine tree. This Christmas forest is open to the public from 9 am to 3 pm on weekends until December 20, but if you arrive off-hours, simply park outside the locked gate, cut your tree and leave payment in the mailbox.
A big ’ol garden-goods emporium most of the year, Greengate goes Christmas crazy when the snow flies. Naturally enough, it sells a serious selection of pleasing pines. Select from Scots and white pine, Douglas, grand and Fraser fir.
Through December, Scandinavian furniture giant IKEA sells real trees for just $20 and receive a $20 coupon towards the purchase of furniture and whatnot. A portion of sales of these trees goes to Tree Canada, a forest conservation organization.
Another garden spot that goes gaga for Christmas, Blue Grass carries trees from five to 14 feet tall. Varieties include balsam and Fraser fir, as well as white pine. The centre is located just north of Calgary on Highway 2. Open 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Wednesday and on weekends, it's open until 8 pm Thursdays and Fridays.
