Shambhala Training Meditation Centre

Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, Shambhala offers a “Learn to Meditate” evening that’s free and open to the public. Teaching the principle that “every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness,” helpful instructors guide first-time participants through a series of calming meditation practices, both seated and walking, with the opportunity to discuss and ask questions afterwards. All classes take place in an intimate studio complete with plush cushions, rugs and warm lighting.

Granville Island

One of Granville Island’s best-kept secrets, the spacious, covered picnic pavilion is tucked away in one of the more quiet corners of the island and overlooks a pretty duck pond. Often empty on rainy days, catch some serenity here at one of two picnic tables or grab your yoga mat and stretch out on the concrete floor – any day of the week. Tip: before you go, check online to ensure a community organization or other group hasn’t already booked the pavilion.

Christ Church Cathedral

Next time you’re visiting UBC, check out the Old Barn Community Centre, where a variety of affordable mindfulness programs offer yoga and meditation classes in a spacious and farm-like setting. Taking its name from the horse barn that once stood in its place, the gorgeous revamped barn is adjacent to Jim Taylor Park, a lush, natural setting for practicing your breath work before or after class.
