Hey Dartmouth – Where’s the pizza at?

The area covered by Dartmouth is much larger than that of Halifax. Tack on Cole Harbour and we’re dealing with a vast area with distinct identities and pizza delivery zones. Whether you live in Highfield Park, Woodside or Montebello, pizza shops can be counted on to provide a wide range of foods of varying quality and value. So, you live in Dartmouth. This list attempts to answer that age-old question: Where is the best pizza?

Revana Pizza Ltd

1
29 Portland St, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1H1

Revana Pizza claims to be the first and oldest pizzeria in Dartmouth (est. 1975). They are located in the heart of downtown, connected to Whiskey’s Lounge, where you can have a couple of drinks with your pizza. According to Revana, their superior crust is due to hand-stretched dough, made from un-bromated, all-natural flour and the use of a stone oven that encourages blistering. The crust, along with a nice, spicy secret sauce, elevates this pizza above the competition.

Pizza Time

2
731 Pleasant St, Dartmouth, NS B2W 1A8

Pizza Time is located in Woodside, and has a loyal following of diehard fans. People have been known to drive half an hour out of their way for some Pizza Time! Why? Pizza Time is known for their friendly service, spicy donairs and big ‘ol cheesy pizzas. The crust is hand-tossed and blistered on the edges, while being quite thin on the bottom. The sauce is flavourful and, I repeat: There is a lot of cheese! This is one satisfying pizza pie.

Sasy's Pizza

3
971 Cole Harbour Rd, Dartmouth, NS B2V 1E8

Sasy’s is a Cole Harbour pizzeria that delivers hefty, cheesy pizzas baked in a stone oven. The crust is hand-tossed; it is thick, crispy, soft in the centre and hopefully just a little charred. Most of the menu is pretty standard, but Sasy’s does do a Mexican pizza and something called the Panchetta, with sun dried tomato, mushroom, roasted garlic and Parmesan cheese. Sasy’s has good prices for sizeable pizzas. You’ll get your bang for your buck here. They also have a bit of a following for their donairs, which they will pack up for travel!

Downtown Pizza & Donair(Dartmouth)

4
172 Wyse Rd, Dartmouth, NS B3A 1M6

Downtown Pizza makes a toppings-forward pizza with topside pepperoni and fresh vegetables. The crust is average, but respectable. Overall, this is a decent option for a pizza pie if you actually want to taste your toppings. They have a fairly extensive ingredient list, with Brother’s pepperoni, artichokes, broccoli, zucchini and roasted garlic available. Specialty pizzas include Greek, Mexican, the curious New York Style BBQ Chicken and the Italian Classic (salami, Italian sausage, bacon, red onion, mozza and Parmesan).

Anapolie Pizza

5
1222 Cole Harbour Rd, Dartmouth, NS B2V 1E9

Cole Harbour has a pretty healthy pizza scene and Anapolie Pizza is no exception. They make a solid pizza baked in a traditional stone oven. The crispy crust has just the right amout of chew, the sauce is nice and spicy and there is adequate cheese coverage. This is not the cheapest pizza, nor is there anything too exciting on the menu. No wacky combinations and no specials promoted on the website. No gimmicks, but the pizza is good.

Tasty Pizza

6
760 Main St, Dartmouth, NS B2W 3T8

Tasty Pizza delivers to Cole Harbour, Forest Hills, Lake Echo, Main Street, Westphal, Montague and surrounding areas. They claim that they have “THE freshest pizza dough in the city” and they are also proud of their pizza sauce, which they prepare daily. The donairs have a bit of a following. Garlic fingers are, of course, available but Tasty also makes bread sticks or, Yum Yums, which are tossed in Parmesan cheese and served with donair dipping sauce.

Hungry Hut

7
135 Ochterloney St, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1C9

The Hungry Hut does not make the best pizza in Dartmouth but they certainly have their fans and, well, you can get them to deliver cigarettes, milk and bread to you. They get points for that. The menu is pretty basic (no specialty pizzas, poutine varieties or oddities) but rumour has it they use real cheese curds on their poutine, which is rare for the pizza shops in this region.

Leo's Pizzeria

8
245 Waverley Rd, Dartmouth, NS B2X 2C5

Leo’s Pizza is a popular spot on Dartmouth’s east end, slinging pizzas and an extensive menu of pizza shop fare. Gluten-free crusts are available (12” only). Leo’s has some of the more interesting appy options in Dartmouth, with sweet potato fries, deep fried pickles and mac ‘n’ cheese bites. Items such as the Belly Buster Donair and Artery Clogger Poutine shamelessly glorify those necessary moments of gluttony we all have from time to time.

Halifax has lots of great coffee shops. Your favourite java place is probably the one in your neighbourhood, where they know your name and what you drink (half-caf no-foam non-fat vanilla soy latte, right?). Maybe you have a go-to shop where you meet up with friends or hold meetings. Or maybe you are a coffee snob and only the best will do!
Haligonians love their pizza, but we’ve become accustomed to budget pizza shops that cater to hungry students, busy families, the post-bar crowd and people in pajamas. Salvatore’s and Tomavino’s have been quietly leading the gourmet pizza front for years but now a brave new Halifax craves local ingredients, authenticity, artisanal technique and a good wine pairing!
For a city with a culinary heritage of boiled fish and potatoes, Halifax is crazy about sushi! Whether you are a newbie, purist or straight up glutton, there is something for everyone. There are budget sushi cafés, all-you-can-eat restaurants, boutique and traditional sushi shops. Whether you prefer authentic nigiri or deep fried cream cheese tempura crunch rolls – there is a world of sushi out there! These are your best bets.
