From 3 to 13 November 2016, 150 Montreal restaurants will be taking part in MTLàTABLE, which celebrates its 5th anniversary this year. Thanks to the formula of three courses for $21, $31 or $41, it’s the perfect opportunity to treat yourself and try something new while staying on budget. So without further ado, here’s a guide to what’s on offer (menus are subject to change). [photo credit: Susan Moss]
The $41 evening menu, created by Simon Mathys, offers a first course of broccoli, mussels and sunflower seeds or potatoes and Avonlea cheddar. For mains, you have a choice of two dishes: trout, squash and ricotta or guinea fowl with beans and cream of leek. For dessert, it’s up to you to decide between the Mexican chocolate with smoked cacao or the pear with white chocolate and pumpkin seeds.
Chef Anthony Del Balso, who runs this popular Italian restaurant on the Plateau, awaits you with a three-course meal for $31, with a starter of baked pears with blue cheese and walnuts or tomatoes with Burrata cheese and basil. For the main course, you have the option of a beef stew with tagliatelle pasta or a pizza with snails, mozzarella and caramelized onions. For dessert, you’ll have to choose between an Italian puff pastry (Sfogliatelle) or a bowl of strawberries with sweetened ricotta and balsamic vinegar.
In this establishment on Ontario Street East, the first course is a choice of fish soup, foie gras and dates, or salmon gravlax served with Labrador tea sour cream. For the main course, the choice is yours between cod fillet, the saddle of rabbit stuffed with Saint-Benoît-du-Lac blue cheese, or fettuccine in squid ink with tomatoes and lemon confit. A brownie with Grand Marnier orange salad for dessert will be sure to round your evening off with a smile.
Chef Guillaume Daly offers a menu at $41 that showcases the best in new cuisine. As a starter, choose between the duck tartare or carpaccio of celery root and shrimp. For the main course, your heart and your stomach will have to settle on either the salmon or smoked beef ribs served with a beet salad. For dessert, you’ll have to opt between the S’mores with chocolate ganache or the petits fours.
The $21 menu at this Indian bistro run by chef Inderjeet Sandhu features some of its specialties, including a first course of soup or Chaat Puri (spicy fried bread and potato), followed by a Basa fish dish served with curry sauce, Saag chicken (spinach and chicken breast) or a regular or vegetarian thali. For dessert, treat yourself with a gulab jamun: baked pasta dumplings served in a rose water syrup.
The French cuisine of chef Pierre Leveque is bound to put a smile on your face during the 5th MTLàTABLE event. By way of starters, the $41 menu features a mixed salad, homemade black pudding, or beet millefeuille with Blue Benedictine cheese. For the second course, you’ll have to choose between the sweetbread medaglioni, the Matane shrimp risotto, and the gnocchi with Île-aux-grues cheddar. Dessert won’t be any easier, with the Oka cheese raclette, rum baba, and a chocolate sweet all fighting for your attention.
