Besides being polite and helping others, few things are more Canadian than poutine – so indulge in your national pride during Calgary Poutine Week 2017, scheduled to run from April 21 to 29. Best of all, each poutine sold at a participating restaurant during the week sends a free meal to a person in need by Mealshare. Here are seven places – one for every day of the week – to grab some poutine during this charitable time.
Knowing that Brewsters' Beer Revolution is all about beer is key to understanding their boozy approach to poutine. In their cheesy tater tot poutine, you’ll find that as far as main ingredients go, the usual suspects are swapped out for tater tots, a bacon cheese sauce, gouda, bacon marmalade and beer-spiked barbecue sauce for a greasy and satisfying take on tradition that’ll ease you into the adventurous offerings available during this year’s Poutine Week.
Just in case choosing where to grab a poutine wasn't hard enough, The Guild has upped the ante by offering six poutines that range in flavours from maple brisket (with maple-glazed beef brisket chili mayo and cheese curds) to onion bhaji (with a coconut curry sauce, tomatoes, cashews and cheese curds). We suggest going with a group to increase your chances of sampling your fellow diners' orders.
Given that Heaven Artisan GF Cuisine’s main focus is Venezuelan fare, it makes perfect sense that their addition to Poutine Week is inspired by Latin flavours. With a base of yucca and potato that’s topped with bacon, chorizo and scallions, this gluten-free poutine is perfect for those who think outside the box – or for those who dream of vacations in South America.
This trendy 17th Avenue bar gives fans of fusion food a reason to rejoice during this year's Poutine Week. On the menu at Roosevelt is a Korean bibimbap-inspired poutine that’s perfect for spice-lovers who are looking for something a little different. With house-cut fries that are topped off with a fried egg, Korean beef, spicy gochujang gravy and mozzarella, all that’s missing is a side of kimchi.
The butter chicken poutine at 1600 World Bier Haus is a hearty meeting of Eastern and Western cuisines, highlighted by a combination of house fries, cheese curds, chipotle yogurt, sauteed chicken and creamy butter chicken sauce. And if you can’t make it to the Pump Hill-adjacent bar in time, this poutine is also available at 1600’s sister locations, 722 World Bier Haus in West Springs and 1410 World Bier Haus on 17 Avenue.
If you’ve ever thought that poutine isn't a date night-worthy indulgence, think again. For those who are hoping to class up their act a bit – or impress a date during Poutine Week – look to The Mission's lobster poutine, which elevates the normally humble yet decadent dish with a heady combination of garlic lobster, anise gravy, cheese curds and fries.
Located in Westbrook Mall, the Dragon's Lair Burger Co. have taken an inventive approach to poutine by offering two vastly different international versions of the dish. Their pad thai poutine combines fries and curds with a mélange of pad thai sauce, cilantro and bean sprouts, while their Ukrainian offering is a heavenly marriage of fries, perogies, sour cream, grilled onions, sausage, green onions and cheese curds.
Offering the only meat-free option during this year's festivities is the samosa poutine from Veg In YYC, a downtown fast-casual eatery. Swapping out fries for a base of samosas that are then smothered in a coconut-based vegan butter chicken sauce and masala-spiced chickpeas, this is the perfect choice for the end of Poutine Week, when poutine enthusiasts could do with some (slightly) lighter fare to help detox all of the curds and whey from their systems.
