Bagel fans who find themselves stranded in the Business District need not panic or hail the first cab to the Mile End to get their fix: Bagels on Greene’s homemade, morning-fresh bagels will satisfy your craving and save you a trip. This café-luncheonette-groceteria hybrid on the corner of Sainte-Catherine and Greene in Westmount is one of the West End’s premier go-to lunch spots for residents and commuters alike.
“Neighbourhood people like to come here to relax a bit in the middle of their days. The atmosphere is always very friendly, the food is healthy and convenient, and the service impeccable. That’s what keeps people coming back, sometimes daily, for a bagel before work or a soup or sandwich between meetings,” explains Amit Mahtani, who runs Bagels on Greene with his family.
Bagels on Greene also offers about 30 salads and just as many sandwich options, various vegetarian and vegan dishes, lunch boxes and a fusion cuisine menu featuring Indian, Italian and North American specialties. “We definitely have something for everybody,” assures Amit.
Although it can't technically be called cozy anymore, what was once a small bagel shop has been transformed into a sprawling café, swallowing up neighbouring storefronts as it has expanded to accommodate its growing clientele. While the decor is reminiscent of a 1980s airport lounge, the food is amazing. In addition to fantastic bagels and coffees, the menu includes full breakfasts, pastries and delicious homemade Indian and Mexican meals. Bagels on Greene is worth the stop, and the steady stream of customers through its doors agrees.
As close as it gets to a New York-style deli/bodega, minus the alcohol, and much cleaner. There’s something here for every taste, with readymade sandwiches, pizzas or salads, as well as a counter for customized orders.
