There are many unique bakeries in Montreal, but if you want a little taste of home, Sweet Lee’s Rustic Bakery is a must see. Founded by brother and sister team Liana and Greg Lessard, the Verdun bakery offers a tantalizing menu of creative flavour combinations that keep people coming back for more. “Working in food was a lifelong dream,” says Liana. “It was something that I had always wanted and I knew I would have some type of establishment. But working in them, I wanted something more homey and comforting, and I felt a bakery was the right setting.”
Liana went to school for cooking, while her brother studied engineering and woodworking. Liana’s culinary expertise puts her in charge of the menu, while Greg manages daily operations, and was responsible for the design and layout of the storefront, seating area and kitchen as well as building the displays, tables, chairs and lighting fixtures. Everything at Sweet Lee’s has a decidedly relaxed and family-oriented feel. Students, young families and seniors all frequent the bakery ― some even putting in an appearance every day.
Sweet Lee’s is the perfect place to enjoy a piece of cheesecake and an espresso on a bustling summer terrasse. Opened in 2010, Sweet Lee’s now supplies cafes around the city in addition to doing brisk business at its Verdun location, and enjoying a partnership with Saint-Henri Micro-torréfacteur that has put an espresso bar in the bakery. The menu changes seasonally, so you can regularly try something new.
Those in need of sugar and pastries, look no further. This shop offers dark chocolate-maple-caramel brownies ($2) and bacon-apple-maple croissants ($4).
One of the now famous CULT MTL winners, Sweet Lee’s ranks second among the best bakeries and pastry shops in Montreal, just behind Guillaume and ahead of Hof Kelsten, Mamie Clafoutis and Première Moisson. And that’s saying something! You’ll find delicious gourmet sandwiches, pizza, scones, desserts and healthy snacks, plus a nice coffee or an iced tea. Dine in (there is even a small terrace) or take out.
