At La Couscoussiers d'Ali Baba, we are happy to greet you through the most enhancing oriental atmosphere. You will also be entertained with a one of a kind oriental dance show featuring beautiful professional dancers.
Nestled between two residential addresses on Amherst Street is Couscoussière d’Ali Baba, whose eccentric décor of spills out onto the sidewalk for all to see. The exotic designs continue inside the restaurant: all surfaces from floor to ceiling are covered with a generous layer of impasto stucco either in a sensuous colour or in copper. Skillfully crafted stalactites and stalagmites evoking a Berber cave are decked out with an array of Maghreb ornaments and coloured lanterns. If there is a place in Montreal that elicits the romance of the Arabian Nights, this is it.
Couscoussière d’Ali-Baba is the work of Béchir Bhire Benkalifa, aka Mr. Béchir. This restaurateur, with his unique vision, loves everything about creating fantasy and dreams.
Step into a cave worthy of the 1001 Nights, and let yourself be transported by Middle Eastern flavours and music. The menu offers many kinds of couscous and tagines, either à la carte, or as part of a table d’hôte, to be accompanied by traditional mint tea. Friday and Saturday nights, the atmosphere is enlivened by folk dancers performing baladi, sword and candlestick dances, and this is the best time to bring a group for a celebration. The restaurant is open for lunch from Wednesday to Friday and in the evening starting at 5 pm from Monday to Sunday.
