Much like the name of his bar, Nigel French is straight to the point, at least when talking about his decision to open the popular Queen Street West locale. “We were tired of working for people and we had talked about opening a bar, and then we just did,” he says, mentioning his co-owners and friends, Vincent Ng and Ginny Tam.
There was no elaborate, inspirational idea behind the late-night Asian-fusion snack bar that informed its mood or look. More so, Nigel explains, Food & Liquor is the “kind of place that I would want to go to.”
After working in restaurants for more than 25 years between the two of them, he and Vincent “wanted to start small,” rather than diving right into the restaurant industry. But with crowds of regulars returning for the bar’s dumplings and casual atmosphere, “small” doesn’t quite capture Food & Liquor’s considerable appeal.
Located in Parkdale, Food & Liquor has an under-the-radar vibe to it. The menus are straight forward, offering a rotating list of bar snacks, with a cocktail menu that has everyone’s favourite classic drinks. Open until 2 am nightly.
Food and Liquor, as the name suggests, is dedicated to simplicity. Located at Queen West and Souraren, Food and Liquor provides first daters with an unpretentious space (complete with a killer back patio), a solid selection of drinks and a rotating menu of share plates and snacks.
If gourmet Chinese dumplings are your thing, Food and Liquor is your spot. This Parkdale gem neighbouring Parts and Labour has the hybrid atmosphere of a chic-yet-divey bar, with craft cocktails and a warmly lit back patio featuring picnic tables and a covered overhang in case of inclement weather. Lamb and cumin or the more traditional pork and chive dumplings are popular orders, followed by the Chinese pancakes with hoisin, Miami short ribs, and such epicurean options as charred octopus and duck tongue. Bonus: these guys also host sweet Sunday roasts with revolving chefs and butchers from across the city.
