I had dinner at The Black Dog Pub a few days ago and it was a great experience. When you're craving pub fare, this is the perfect place to go. The food is is outstanding and the menu is fairly priced. The staff was kind and the service was amazing! I would recommend The Black Dog Pub to anyone whether you're looking for a family night out, a nice date with your partner or just looking to meet friends, you will keep coming back!
Their slogan is "You are a stranger but once..." That's thanks to the awesome staff that work here, from host to bartender and servers. Generally decent pub food, but not for the price. Portions are large, but I think quality suffers at the expense of quantity. All the food is premium priced for a pub (fish and chips $17.50, wings $14+!). Pints are slightly higher priced than other places in the area. Wine requires a mortgage. Atmosphere is warm and cozy, but a little too cozy when it's busy, as the entrance is through the bar area. Doubly frustrating to see empty tables reserved in the bar area when it's busy.
I was at the black dog nearly a week ago and I decided to try something off of their feature menu. I don't recall the name of the sandwich but it was essentially battered fish (traditional fish and chip style) on a ciabatta bun. It reminded me of something i would see on diners drive ins and dives. The experience could only be described as gluttonous.
I was at the black dog the first time for dinner a few nights ago, I never write on these types of websites becuase its usually people complaining. Wel,l I had such a great time at the black dog figured I'd share my thoughts! The owner and staff were so friendly and inviting. The food was outstanding and goes above and beyond pub fare. I hightly recommend this establishment. And do not forget the dessert! There were a few of us who ordered different desserts and they were all incredible!!
I live in the heart of Toronto and try to visit the Black Dog as often as possible. I have visited many pubs in Toronto and always find them serving poor quality food. This is why I always make a trip to The Black Dog Pub. The food is exceptional and atmosphere is warm and inviting. I recommend it to anyone looking to dine out with their significant other, or with a group of friends.
This was my third time visiting the black dog and first since the renovations. My girlfriend, another couple and I sat by the new fireplace. The atmosphere was amazing to say the least, it was the perfect mood for dinner and drinks. The only problem I had was what to chose off of the menu. The black dog definitely breaks the mould for stereotypical pub food and i would suggest surf and turf.
First time at the pub, stopped by the other day with my GF during the hockey game. The atmosphere is ok but the food is not!!!! The quality and presentation is below par and needs improving, over price for the food quality.... will not go back!!! There're better pub's nearby with better food for the price! The manger should look into this by asking ask customers discretely for feed back during the evening. The waitresses are just doing their best don't tell them, blame the Manager and Chief for poor quality of food ! Sent the chief to Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" for courses !!!
It was an okay experience. Based on the reviews here, though, we were expecting a lot more. We traveled pretty far just to try it out, and I'm not sure that we'll make a repeat trip. The food overall was decent, but nothing special. It did arrive fast, however. We ordered the bangers and mash, and the 1/4 chicken with 1/4 rack of ribs (from the "must try" special). The sausage was plain, and the beans tasted from a can. The ribs were nothing special, and the chicken was burned on the outside -- we didn't find it a "must try" at all. Overall, it was fine, but we don't agree with the hype. They provided a survey after the meal, but the check boxes were all pre-filled to "Excellent" and we weren't provided with a pen to change them... I was also disappointed that they don't serve Yorkshire pudding, though the waitress said that they might have it on Sundays? I wasn't too clear.
Was it really Queen Sandra I saw there the other day? Awesome to see a beautiful face back at the pub. She was dearly missed. ;)
My wife and I have enjoyed the Black Dog Pub many, many times, during the previous and the newer ownership. We have never heard anything but compliments from our friends and family whom we've brought there, in parties of three, four and more. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service always friendly and professional, the portions generous and the quality of the authentic pub food is consistently good, offered at reasonable prices. We'll be there again soon.
Great spot for drinks and some pub grub
This place though just radiates old hauntings of Ken. Perhaps George, you should do a remodel and clean the place up and make it new. The food is great! Yet, the atmosphere is lacking. I was there last week again for a pint and it does look tired and a tad "weather-beaten". A little spruce up would do wonders.
This is a great neighborhood hang out we found after moving to West Rouge 3 weeks ago. My husband and I love the fact that this pub is walking distance, serves ice cold beer, staff are friendly and serves decent food. I'm not sure how many people walk into a pub and expect Marc Thuet quality food (and Chef Thuet DOES NOT craft all his food himself. His sous chefs and line cooks do. He simply oversees production) but Black Dog lives up to standards set for most gastropubs if not exceed them. Not sure what all the complaints are about but good luck finding a better place to hang out in the area.
I recently took a trip down to the blackdog with my girlfriend on valentines. The only word that really comes to mind is fantastic. I ordered a special off of the valentines menu, while my girlfriend ordered the chicken penne. To say the least the valentines day special was probably one of the better pastas I have ever had with the shrimp and scallops cooked perfectly. My girlfriend also enjoyed her meal, and we both left perfectly content as the meal portions are massive. To cap off this great night the owner himself bought us a slice of cheesecake. The service was spectacular and the food was mouth-watering, and I'm sure we will be eating at the black dog for years to come.
We couldn't agree more and love this place now more than ever. The food is fabulous and the service is top notch. More than it ever was. The previous owner needs to 'keep busy' in his own life and leave this place alone. "Childs" play is a very funny anecdote. We have never been so welcomed and treated so respectfully and warmly. (It's blatantly obvious that everyone else has moved on to a better life than him I guess.) Good job George!! George is a class act. BTW, no one listens to the bad reviews. The 4 of us love this place even more than we did over the last 16 years.
Remarkable! The previous comment mimics "childs" play. Thousands of folks have enjoyed the Black Dog Pub for years. Be it with friends, family and/or new aquaintances. Visits to this popular establishment has been for high levels of social enjoyment, private parties and business meetings! Rest assure, the creative and vast menu items, friendly and seamless service, work well together - maintaining an atmosphere similar to what one would expect from a famous Toronto (or NYC ) trend spot! Check it out for yourself...you'll be glad you did.
Absolute rubbish! Who would rate this place a 5 out of 5. Baseball hats, wings, loud music. Over rated restaurant that doesn't live up to its reputation. We orderd nachos. They were cold and measly small. We ordered Guiness. The beer was warm. The server was rude. The owner was ignorant and didn't seem to care. Fish and Chips were greasy and tasted 'fishy' and old. Not impressed.
The Black Dog is better than ever...people on here complain as they have nothing better to do than to complain...My food is always what I expect there....large portions and not ever having to be sent back. Service is great and it is worth every penny. Try going to any other restaurant and gettting this same consistant service and great food....good luck!
Haven't been to the black dog in years. Honestly we only returned because we heard it was under new ownership. Wow what a change! The food was fantastic, and couldn't get over the huge portions. The staff is just amazing they were so friendly and accomodating to our party. We had a couple of people with food allergies and they created special dishes just for them! Don't believe the negative reviews, this place is better than ever!
As a member of the community, I think we are absolutely blessed to have the Black Dog in the area. The changes I have seen there lately are welcomed and I am very thankful to see familiar faces. It is unfortunate to see that some people find it necessary to write such hurtful and untrue comments about our fabulous pub/restaurant. To all the staff - keep up the good work! I am not going anywhere!
