Mother and I have been going to Swiss Chalet since it was out by what is now Canadian Tire but this past visit on 18/07/12 was horrid! I ordered a whole rack of ribs, vegetable medley and a diet Pepsi, my mom ordered the quarter chicken dinner with a baked potato and vegetable medley and a hot tea. Every single order of ribs up until now were meaty and juicy and smothered in sauce but lately? It feels like the food is rushed out of the kitchen to our table! Barely any sauce on the ribs and to make matters worse, last night's ribs were more fat and bones then meat! What happened, was the cow on a diet or something that you can't get nice fat juicy ribs like you show in your commercials?! Even worse,my elderly mother's chicken wasn't even hot,nor were the vegetable medley or the baked potato! The only thing hot was her tea! It seems each time mother and I go there for supper we usually order a Carrot Cake and a Fudge Cake but lately it seems that the Fudge Cake is always unavailable or it's run out. Did I mention the FLIES that harassed us while we ate?! Yeah lovely extra nourishment with your meal?!
We had visited the old Swiss Chalet location in Sarnia on an occasional basis over a 30 year period. It seemed to me that in the last few years I didn’t get the same satisfaction there as in years past. So when the new location opened further west on London Road in the Fall of 2010, we visited in the Christmas season, looking for some kind of improvement. Instead, it was one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve had – indifferent greeting, dirty table, careless waitress, mixed up order, swearing through the door from the kitchen staff. I said I never wanted to return. But now a year later, my wife, who had always liked the Swiss Chalet chicken and ribs, wanted to give it another chance. I was curious to see if it was still so bad, so we gave it a try. Parking at the front was tight. The restaurant was busy but not full. There was a group ahead of us waiting to be seated. The greeter was a young woman, very casual about her duties. I watched her lead people towards their tables, drop the menus before they were seated, and then quickly return to the front without saying very much to them. It’s so important for the greeter to make a good first impression. Why didn’t they give her better training? Our waitress arrived soon enough. All the waitresses seemed to be friendly and pretty casual: “What would you guys like? I had the cup of chicken soup ($2.99) and a sandwich – the Hickory Rotisserie Chicken Flatbread ($7.49). My wife had the Half Rack BBQ Special ($15.99). The soup came quickly. It was not as good as I remember and it was just warm, not hot. The rest of our order came 25 minutes after we arrived. That’s bordering on slow service, although the waitresses were busy, and I got a drink refill when she noticed my glass was empty. Soft drinks ($2.59) were not in a particularly large glass. My sandwich started off okay, but by the time I was eating the second half, I didn’t think it was so great. I wished that I’d ordered the ribs like my wife. She got a generous serving. She couldn’t eat them all, and gave me three ribs, which I really enjoyed. The lighting in the new place was as bright as a highway rest stop but it seems to lack the warm atmosphere of the old place. The washrooms (the Men’s anyway) were very spacious, well lighted and clean. It’s family dining so that means kids, and they mean messes. I noticed under one table that the floor messy with a napkin, French fry, and a crayon. They should have been swept up. Instead, someone else was seated there. We were in and out in just under an hour. Total cost for two before tip was $ 32.84 which was higher than I thought it would be. We’ve had better food and service at most Sarnia bar and grills for the about same price. My experience has improved on the second visit to the new Swiss Chalet from “terrible’ to “mmmh, okay, I guess’”. The place was busy but not full on Tuesday night at supper time. My wife and a few people we know really like Swiss Chalet chicken and ribs. I’d go back with them if that’s where they wanted to go. For myself, alone? Nahhh ! They have an on-line menu (prices not listed unless you download) and take-out is available.
Not sure what is wrong with this place...we used to love the food....but the service is so bad...it is ridiculous! How dies a chicken restaurant always seem to "run out of chicken"? Don't bother ordering mashed potatoes, you wil get the smallest portion I have ever seen in my life! The rest of the food is usually pretty good. The fries can be either great or terrible, you never know. The place is dirty...the floors are greasy and slippery. Most of the wait staff have bad attitudes and never come back to refill your drinks or check on you. Everytime we go here....I end up being so angry and disappointed.....don't waste your time and money on this one, but hopefully the new location will be better. I have complained several times on their online survey. The survey actually asks you if you would like someone to contact you regarding your recent experience. I have clicked yes like 5 times now and have never heard from anyone.
We decided to go to Swiss Chalet for lunch and I am glad we did. The food was great and the waitress was friendly and came over several times to top our coffees up and ask How is everything. Comments are noted on this site about the floor and they have had numerous complaints about it. It is something to do with humidity and the floor material. We too felt the floor was greasey but it is something to do with the coating on the tiles. No worries when the new place opens next spring!
Very good food, greatly enjoy. However, the restaurant has a serious cleanliness problem. The floor feels as though it is perpetually coated in a thin layer of grease. At times, I have nearly fallen from this. Be careful.
this has got to be the oldest and most dirty swiss chalet around. The service is poor waitresses are unfriendly and tables not even clean ... they need a whole new restaurant and staff!!!
Agree with past posters size is small, and cleanliness is much to be desired. This restuarant has seen better days. Nothing a bit of extra dusting wiping down and elbow grease. Staff attitude is poor also.
This reastaurant is filthy, don't look too close you'll walk out it you haven't ordered. I don't think I'll return to the restaurant again, I'll buy the sauce (best part) at take out and pick up a chicken and kaisers at the grocery store. Even the take out in the past has been terrible service, all students working with no clue about customer service or they just forget that we see everything when picking up take out. Wake up time Chalet Manager.
Wow Swiss challet has gotten bigger plates and smaller portions, are they sure there serving chicken and not pigeons? Portions for the price are hidious. The baked potato had grit on it.Seemed like we waited forever. The best part of this meal was the glass of cold milk!
I think that this is the best restaurant in the world. It has awesome food and good service, and overall i think its pretty good. You should go check out any Swiss Chalet near you if you havent tried it yet. It is awesome.
Forget ordering a 1/4 chicken dinner for the adult when you can order a kids 1/4 chicken meal for alot less then the adult one and it's the same portion size... minus the bun, Whoopee! My daughters kiddy meal was the same size as my 'adult' size one. Total rip. Think they know it? Id rather just cook chicken at home now and buy the sauces at the grocery store perhaps.
