Went tonight for first time! Fantastic evening!!! Gigi our server was helpful, entertaining and was able to explain how and why many of the dishes are served a certain way. Food was tasty, fresh and delicious. Spices were added to our liking we will definitely be back again !
Last year this used to be my favourite Indian restaurant. Sadly it has gone into a steep decline. Ambience is dirty and uncared for. Service is ambilvilent. Check your order (neither portion of rice and when we pointed out only one portion of the two onion bajis, they took the order to the kitchen and cut it up into smaller pieces, and served it with a 1970's'esque thousand island sauce; yeuch. The meat was good quality and plentiful, but sauce not so good. Overcharged. Sorry, never again.
The staff were so welcoming when we arrived. The owner came over and introduced himself. The food arrived promptly and was fabulous. The tastes were complex with subtle layering so that each bite was a treat. Our group tried many new dishes and each one was a home run. The owner came by and explained to us how each dish was prepared and explained the different foods that went into it. He also said that we could arrange with him a week or so in advance and he'd prepare some special dishes not on the menu. The food and service were stellar and I will definitely be going back.
I was hopeful from reading the other reviews that the food would be good. It was poor. The chicken dansak was....well not chicken dansak. Not a lentil in sight. The nan was dry, as were the bhajis I would not eat here again and couldn't recommend it.
I can't say enough good about the pearl of india. Just the kind of place I need to wind down from a busy week. Food is fantastic, sauces are thick and the meat is always prepared right. Love it and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a nice quiet evening. The owners smile is more than enough to make me want to go back again and again.
Pearl of India is our favorite Indian restaurant in the national capital region. The sauces are exceptional! We often get their take-out, but also enjoy eating in the restaurant. The staff are very friendly and we have always had great service. Highly recommended!
This was the first Indian restaurant I went to when I moved to Orleans. At the time I thought it was just okay and really overpriced for what little you get. As time went on, the food seemed to get worse. I always order chicken korma, and the first time I went it was pretty good, then after that, each visit the korma sauce was really runny and watered down. Korma is NOT supposed to be thin and watery. The nan is delicious and the staff are all really nice, but they are overpriced and you can get better Indian food at a better price down the street at Rangoli's.
Perhaps this restaurant has changed hands since all those positive reviews? I could hardly believe that previous reviewers were writing about the same restaurant I visited on July 18. The "mulligatawny" soup tasted overpoweringly of chicken boullion cube and reminded me of cup-a-soup. The entrées were not unlike those Indian meals that come in foil packets and are meant to be heated in boiling water over a camp stove. The only flavour I could detect in the butter chicken, which contained four 1-inch cubes of mushy chicken, was sweet. Maybe the cook mixed in a handful of sugar and some pink food colouring by mistake? The aloo peas was grayish-yellow, overcooked and salty, with a dusty turmeric and MSG aftertaste. The rice served with the entrees was about the only redeeming factor. It was...not overcooked. And finally, I suspect the naan was made with Bisquick. Yep, lunch was cheap, and there can be no doubt why. I rarely leave food on my plate, but I did here.
My first visit a few days ago. Was very disappointed with the service and the meals. I ordered three vegetarian dishes and a meat dish. The vegetarian dishes were hastily prepared without any regard to presentation. The sauces were the same. Both dishes contained peas that were simply emptied out of the freezer - hardly flavorful at all. The meat dish was overcooked and seemed to have been prepared long before. Service was quite poor. i will not be going back to this restaurant again. Very disappointing.
The restuarant is nice, there is ample parking but the excellent food is what makes this a superior dining adventure either in or out. The chicken dishes are excellent with no fat and nice large pieces. The spices do not overwhelm the taste but if you like it hot then they will make it as hot as you like! The Nan bread is comparable to other establishments. The rice is superior and the chicken curry is good. All in all the meal is clean and the owners/servers are respectful, polite and always happy. This is an excellent food experience and I would rate it above any other Indian restaurant I have been to in Metro-Ottawa; and I have been to many!
Orleans doesn't have much to choose from by way of restaurants and if the Pearl of India on Montreal Rd. is in any way reflective of the dining experience in the area, it would explain why. My wife and I ate at the restaurant on Saturday October 4, 2008 and we were sadly disappointed in both the service and the quality of the food. The list of negatives includes: * the wrong appetizer was brought out. * one of the reasons we visited the Pearl was that it had a coupon in our soon to expire Entertainment Book and we wanted to take advantage of it. We had the book and coupon sitting in plain sight from the moment we sat down. When we received our main course, we were informed the coupon could not be used on our particular meal. It would have been nice to have been told that earlier. * there was a long black hair in the rice dish * both the appetizer and main dishes included lettuce and a sweet thousand island dressing. That's fine if I'm going to a bar but not something I expect at an Indian restaurant. * Indian sauces should be rich and creamy. The tandoori sauce in our shrimp plate was thin and watery. * tandoori chicken had black cilantro that you could tell was days old. Overall, a disappointing meal and not a restaurant we'll ever be going back to.
We go from Lincoln Heights to Orleans for the great food and hospitality at Pearl of India. We have been shown the kitchen and it is immaculate. Every dish is delicious!!
The food is fantastic and the decor is delightful. The service is a little slow but this is a small family run restaurant. The staff is cordial and very accomodating! The whole restaurant experience was a surprize as it's located next to a tire shop! Love it! Will definitely be back! R in Orleans
We found this gem of a restaurant about two years ago and fell in love with the wonderful flavours, freshness, and overall tastes of the food. Since then, this food has become part of our regular diet - we have dinner at the Pearl of India at least twice a month - and have never been disappointed with the food, the service, or the overall experience. The owners and staff share a passion for food which is readily apparent when you talk with them and when you taste your meal. Truly the work of artists...
We took the family out and had a wonderful time! The service was incredible and the food was fabulous. This place is definitely worth visiting again and again!
This is the best indian food weve had anywhere in the world. It was well prepared, the presentation was great and the service was excellent.
Amazing food! I've been going here for 6 years and I would never switch restaurants. I've tried other Indian cuisines, but Pearl of India is THE BEST, and the prices are very reasonable in comparisson to other places.
We have been eating here and sharing it with friends & colleagues for 7 years. The consistencey of the flavours and presentation is the reason NO ONE has been disappointed. We have introduced this restaurant to maybe 30-40 people.
This is truly an amazing place to visit, not only are you getting the finest Indian food around you have the wonderful family that works there. Mo truly welcomes you into his place as if you are part of his family, make yourself at home and enjoy "The Pearl of India"
