In the heart of Vancouver’s historic Gastown, Neighbour’s understated sign on Water Street beckons towards one of the city’s best-kept secrets. At the end of a tranquil passageway, this menswear shop across from Shirakawa Japanese Restaurant offers not only one-of-a-kind clothing but also art objects, watches, wallets, candles and other charming wares from independent makers and creators around the globe.
Basked in natural sunlight (three of Neighbour’s four walls are floor-to-ceiling windows), wood tables and industrial-style racks display more than 40 different menswear and unisex brands. “It’s a worldly collection,” says manager Justin Lintag, who receives shipments from designers in Scandinavia, Japan, northern Europe, the UK and the US each season.
Such ever-evolving product makes for a thrilling, exclusive experience. Encountering the perfect pair of black jeans or crisp white t-shirt at Neighbour is “like discovering a musician you’ve never heard before,” says Justin. “Our brands are often uncharted,” he continues, “which allows us to create our own particular niche for men’s clothing in Vancouver.”
Tucked away in Gastown, Neighbour has earned a reputation as Vancouver’s premier menswear boutique thanks to owner Saager Dilawri’s discerning eye. A true believer in the road less traveled, Saager and his fashion forward associates travel north often, scouring trade shows to bring back lovely Our Legacy crewnecks, suede trainers from Eytys, dark knits of the Chauncey variety, and much more. Timeless clothes (with a twist) are complimented by a striking collection of art objects, many of which also hail from Scandinavia, of course.
Tucked away from Gastown’s main drag, Neighbour is a finely curated men’s clothing boutique. If Dad loves contemporary fashion, he’ll be pleased as a punch to be dressed in refined duds from Neighbour. The minimalist store also carries magazines, accessories and designer objects from around the world that will surely delight dapper dads.
Impeccably stylish with very little effort — this is the vibe conveyed at this Water Street men’s store. Crisp, casual and neutral but embellished with subtle design flair — a denim shirt in ombré, colour-blocked sweatshirts, unique buttons — make every item sold here a strong long-term investment for your closet. Ties are no different. Cotton or silk ties in plain pastels or masculine large, diagonal stripes fit right in at either the law office or the summer garden party. One more element adding to your effortless style.
