Hemant and Bimla Rao opened Steveston Bakery in 1989 following six years of Hemant honing his craft at bakeries across the Lower Mainland, San Francisco and the Napa Valley. “We come from the Fiji Islands, so we have always loved the water," says Hemant. "The ocean is so much closer here, in Steveston. Every weekend we would come here, even before we had the business.” Hemant and Bimla fell in love with Steveston and jumped at the opportunity to open a bakery of their own in the seaside community.
“Steveston needed a good bakery,” Hemant says, “and people like what I do. They really appreciate having a ma and pa bakery in the neighbourhood.” With a deep connection to the community, Steveston Bakery has become a fixture for visitors and residents alike, who know they can trust Hemant’s breads, loaves, cakes, pastries, pies, soups, and other foods to be wholesome, hearty, and delicious.

Locals can usually be found hanging out at this quintessential small-town bakery enjoying baked goods or indulging in the popular soup du jour. Open at 7:30 a.m. most days, early risers can get a head start choosing from the breakfast menu. The display case is filled with bread, cakes, cookies, croissants and, my personal favourite, Steveston Bakery’s delicious apple pie.
