Eileen Edwards and her husband Ian came to Sherwood Park looking to set up a new church, but they discovered there were already plenty of churches in the area. However, as they were researching the area they discovered there was still a need for better community connections. In Edmonton, Eileen had been working at the social enterprise café, The Carrot, and thought the concept would be a great fit for Sherwood Park. So she founded Common Ground Community Cafe. “The response has been fantastic,” says Eileen. “It is a different ethos than any other coffee shop. In a regular coffee shop you can see someone having a conversation, but you would never join it. You can do that easily at Common Ground.”
Volunteers came from all walks of life to help get Common Ground off the ground. “We have 55 to 60 volunteers, most of whom I didn’t know before opening the café,” says Eileen. “The people from the community wanted to be a part of it. That’s really cool because you get to meet lots of people that you otherwise would never run into.”
