Katryna Springer picks up the lid from a pot she’s displaying near a wall of windows in her store, Heart of the Home, pointing out the dimples on its interior. “These are self-basting, so that the pot keeps your meats, especially chicken or roast, really moist. So, you don’t have to make it in the oven; you can cook it stove top,” she says of the high end casserole dish by Zwilling J.A. Henckels. The protrusions on the lid create a precipitation effect, returning juices back into the food, and allowing less moisture to escape during cooking.
Despite her knowledge, Katryna did not grow up enamoured by cooking; she developed the passion after eight years of working for Call the Kettle Black, a now-closed kitchenware and gift shop that was also on High Street, very close to where Heart of the Home now resides. “Learning about all the different products, and how they can make cooking easier, and make your food taste better – I just jumped right in,” says Katryna.
Today I went to the shop to show what had happened to a silicone whisk I had purchased about 5 or 6 months ago (obviously, I had no receipt). The inside of the whisk had rusted out and fallen apart while I was whisking. The person who I showed the whisk to did little to provide me with another whisk and told me that since I didn't know the brand name (it wasn't on the whisk and there were none in the area I had found it) she would not be able to credit me for the purchase.
I absolutely adore shopping at Heart of the Home! They have everything and anything that you need in the kitchen. I just purchased my first home and completely stocked up on unique kitchen wares and even grabbed a few gifts for friends as a thank you for helping me move! And, I cant forget how friendly and non-pushy the staff are!
